Conversion in Israel

Home > Conversion in Israel

For some oleh families, the topic of conversion may be relevant.

For those who were not born Jewish or who are not considered Jewish according to Halacha (Jewish law), conversion is the formal religious procedure for becoming part of the Jewish people.

This is a sensitive topic. It is important to emphasize: conversion is not mandatory and is not even a recommendation – we are presenting information here only for those who are interested in clarifying and learning about the options.

Those who set this goal for themselves can achieve it in diverse ways: there are private rabbinical courts for conversion in Israel and abroad that are recognized in Israel, alongside a state track funded by the State of Israel (for citizens and permanent residents).

The State process – in brief: Conducted through the Conversion Authority in the Prime Minister’s Office.

Process stages:

  • Opening a file with the Conversion Authority or contacting a conversion ulpan at one of the organizations operating in cooperation with it.
  • A period of study and preparation in topics of Jewish fundamentals, history of the Jewish people, holidays, kosher laws, Shabbat, and more.
  • Personal accompaniment and occasionally, placement with an accompanying family.
  • Towards completion – interview before a rabbinical court for conversion, meeting halachic requirements.
  • Circumcision for men, and immersion in a mikveh for men and women.
  • Upon completion of the process: a conversion certificate is issued and official registration in the population registry.

One of the organizations providing conversion preparation is “Nativ – The National Center for Identity and Conversion.” Nativ offers two main tracks:

  • Military track – for IDF soldiers and national service volunteers. The course lasts about three months, and can be started at the beginning of service or later.
  • Civilian track – studies at flexible hours and offered in different languages.
