As of October 1, 2021, a driver’s license issued for private vehicles, motorcycles, and commercial vehicles up to 12 tons (category A and B) will be valid until age 70 (instead of 10 years). From 70, you’ll need to renew your license when you’re 75 and 80. From 80 you’ll need to renew it every two years.
  • About a month before your current license expires, you should receive a payment request voucher in the mail. If you don’t receive it, you can inquire about it in the following ways:
Call the Misrad HaTachbura (משרד התחבורה) Transportation Ministry’s “Rishui Call” call center at *5678 or 03-5086905.
Operating hours: Sunday to Thursday, from 07:00 – 18:00, Friday and Holiday Eves, from 07:00 – 13:00. The automated call center runs 24 hours a day.
  • Visit a Misrad HaRishui (משרד הרישוי) licensing offices with your Teudat Zehut (תעודת זהות) ID card. Note that Misrad HaRishui is available by appointment only. Call *5678 or schedule an appointment.
  • Use a Rishiomat (רשיומט), a self-service computer station located at local Misrad HaRishui licensing offices, some shopping malls, or at select Super Pharm branches. Check the Super Pharm branch to find which branches have a self-service station. (In the above link, the following options have already been selected: Sherutim Nosafim (שירותים נוספים) then Sherutim Memshaltiim (שירותים ממשלתיים). Now one needs to just search for the appropriate city).
  • Visit a post office branch where applicable.

Pay the Renewal Fee using one of the Following Methods:

On the official government portal: You can also view our video tutorial on how to use the site.

On the Misrad HaTachbura site: A temporary license will be emailed to you immediately, and your permanent license will be mailed to you within 30 days.

Via digital payment apps like Apple or Google Pay and Max: A temporary license will be emailed to you, and you should receive your permanent license by mail within 30 days.

You can pay by bank transfer if you are registered at your bank for online banking services with confirmation of payment transfers to a third party. Enter the online payment form and press “Payment at a bank” for secure payment when asked for payment options.

Payment must be made with the credit card of the person whose license is being renewed. The payment is recorded immediately in the Misrad HaTachbura system, and you can print your temporary license on-site.

By calling *5678 or 03-5086905, you’ll receive a Mispar Ishur (מספר אישור) payment confirmation reference number. A temporary license will be emailed to you immediately for printing, and your permanent license will be mailed to you within 30 days at the address listed in Misrad HaPnim. Remember to save the Mispar Ishur!

You can pay for your driver’s license at any Post Office branch. Your temporary license will be issued immediately, and your permanent license will be sent to you within 30 days. Your payment will be updated in the Misrad HaTachbura system within 14 days.

Name Change: If you need to change your first name or last name on your license, you must register the changes at Misrad HaPnim before paying for your new driver’s license. Click here to change your first name or your last name. There is a fee to be paid when making these changes.

If your payment request voucher indicates that you need a photo for your license, you can get your picture taken at a photo station. You must pay for your license first and bring your temporary driver’s license to the photo station. The photo will be uploaded directly into the Ministry of Transport’s database and will be printed on your permanent license.

Professional drivers 60+, including taxi drivers, bus drivers, and heavy equipment operators are required to undergo health checkups and eye tests. All other drivers are required only from age 70.

The results of the eye checkup must be signed by an ophthalmologist or optometrist. See the form here.

If relevant, one should receive a health form in the mail about 6 months before the current license expires. If it wasn’t received but is required, the driver should call *5678, or download the form online (scroll down to Health checkups for drivers over 60), or pick one up from your local Misrad HaRishui.

Have your doctor complete and sign the form and submit it to Misrad HaTachboera along with your other documents. There are two options:

  1. In person at your local Misrad HaTachbura branch. It is recommended that you submit all eye/medical forms as early as possible to make sure your license is ready before your old ones expires.
  2. Or by regular mail (not registered!):

in English:
Misrad HaTachbura
The Licensing Division, Update and Control Department
P.O Box 270
Holon 5810201

or in Hebrew:
משרד התחבורה
מחלקת עדכון ובקרה
ת.ד 270
חולון, 5810201

NoteIf your license is about to expire (within about one month), and you haven’t received a reply regarding your health checkups, you can request a temporary license at a licensing office. It’ll be valid for 6 months.

The cost of obtaining a driver’s license in Israel depends on your age and the type of license you need. Fees are subject to change. For example, until age 70 for category A and B (cars, motorcycles and light trucks) the fee is 524 NIS. A five-year license costs 227 NIS, and a two-year license costs 96 NIS.
