Een van de negen plekken in Israël die zijn ingeschreven op de Werelderfgoedlijst van UNESCO is ‘Masada’.
Deze vesting, gebouwd door Herodes de Grote (koning van Judea) die leefde tussen 37 v.Chr. en 4 n.Chr., was oorspronkelijk bedoeld als paleis van de koning.
Masada kreeg echter vooral bekendheid omdat het diende als de laatste verdedigingslinie van de Joodse opstand tegen de Romeinen. Het werd uiteindelijk vernietigd door de Romeinen in 73 n.Chr.
Dit prachtige bouwwerk, gekenmerkt door geavanceerde techniek, kan vandaag de dag nog steeds worden bezocht. Er zijn veel overblijfselen van de massieve muren, kamers, schuren en waterleidingsystemen.
De vesting van Masada symboliseert de Joodse strijd voor onafhankelijkheid in hun eigen thuisland, het land van Israël.
