Uno dei 9 luoghi in Israele che sono iscritti nella Lista del Patrimonio Mondiale dell’UNESCO è ‘Masada’.
Questa fortezza, costruita da Erode il Grande (re di Giudea) che visse tra il 37 a.C. e il 4 d.C., era originariamente destinata ad essere il palazzo di un re.
Tuttavia, Masada ha guadagnato la sua reputazione principalmente perché ha servito come l’ultima resistenza della ribellione ebraica contro i Romani. Fu infine distrutta dai Romani nel 73 d.C.
Questa magnifica struttura, caratterizzata dalla sua sofisticata ingegneria, può ancora essere visitata oggi. Ci sono molte testimonianze delle sue massicce mura, stanze, stalle e sistemi di approvvigionamento idrico.
La fortezza di Masada simbolizza la lotta ebraica per l’indipendenza nella propria patria, la terra di Israele.
